Wild Horse & Burro Statistics
The BLM maintains and manages statistical databases regarding the Wild
Horse and Burro program. Herd Area (HA) and Herd Management Area (HMA)
acreages were calculated using GIS. The BLM policy is to establish Appropriate
Management Levels (AML) - the ecological balance among wild horses and
burros and the BLM's multiple use mission - as a range with upper and
lower levels, the numbers displayed represents the upper limit. Removal,
population, and adoption numbers are monitored, tracked and reported
annually. The following reports contain those statistics.

The following files contain maps showing herd areas and herd management
areas in the western U.S. and individual states. The maps were developed
using GIS and Adobe Reader is needed to view the maps. The zoom function
in Adobe Reader will enlarge the images. The maps are current as of October,
2005 and will be updated as necessary. For acres and populations contained
in each HA or HMA refer to the FY 2005 Wild Horse and Burro Statistics
current through February, 2005.
